Missouri Trip: Review and Road Home

Wednesday: We spent the afternoon playing a game called Pit before we went to Kansas City. We left Blue Springs about five to arrive at the Crown Center to eat at Fritz's. The food is similar to Sonics, but the deliver method is what makes this restaurant unique. Around the entire restaurant, above each booth is a train track. At each booth is an elevator that lowers the food that is delivered by the train. You review the menu and pick up an old telephone receiver to place your order. Than the train whistle blows and the train comes from the kitchen to deliver your food. After dinner, we explored Crown Center and the connecting Westin Hotel. Later that evening we explored the famed Country Club Plaza. Known just as the Plaza, during Christmas time they lite the area with thousands of lights. To conclude the night, we went to Kim's uncle John and aunt Tina's home to watch Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Before we arrived at there house, we stopped at Quicktrip. Quicktrip is a gas station that has wonderful Freezonies (basically an icee). We had a delightful evening with her family, the hospitality was overwhelming. It was a blessing to be in such good company, watching a film, eating pop corn and laughing.

Thursday: The night before, we had planned to travel to St. Louis that morning. We were going to get an early start and see a few sites in St. Louis, but we did not get out of bed in time. We awoke about 10am and decided it would be to cancel our plans. Instead of getting up, we feel back to sleep and had breakfast at 1pm. After a the ladies prepared breakfast, we decided to take a nap. It may seem like laziness at first, but keep reading. We decided to rest the afternoon away and have dinner in Kansas City. We ate at Buca di Beppo in the Plaza. It is a family Italian restaurant that serves authentic Italian food. We explored the Plaza and did a little shopping. After leaving the Plaza, we explored downtown. We found a city park that overlooked the Missouri River. We headed back to Blue Springs early to visit with Kim's father who had been away on business. JMob's father was concerned about the weather and about midnight, we became concerned. After reviewing all the maps online, watching news casts from Dallas to Okalhoma City, we decided it would be in our best interest to leave that night (an ice storm was about to hit). We packed our things and said our goodbyes a few hours early and began our journey home about 1am Friday morning. Within forty-five minutes, the ladies on the trip were sleeping and JMob and I talked and sang the miles away. About 4am, JMob and I listened to Oklahoma radio warning all the listeners about poweroutages, getting all necessities from the store and advising people not to travel after 7am. Our projected rate, put us in Dallas by 7am. We had beaten the storm. The laziness earlier blessed us with enough energy to get us home and prevent us from being stranded in Missouri. Kari and I spent the weekend with her little sister Shelbi. We ate Mr. Gatti's with JMob, played video games and watched Napoleon Dynamite. It was a good end to the week.

Now, we are experiencing the Ice Storm 2007, accoring to the TV News. Most public schools have cancelled class and all universities have done the same. This might be the best way to start of semester, just don't go! It will be nice to have an extension on the Christmas break, but I am ready to get back to school. That is it for now...have a good day...stay warm...and God Bless.

Missouri Trip: Mid-Week Review

Monday: We began our trip on Monday to Kim's house in Blue Springs, MO. Kari, Jonathan, Beth, and I were "On the road again." We spent most of the day on the road, leaving San Marcos at 6:45am. We arrived in Dallas about 10am and spent an hour at NorthPark Mall. After our break, we hit 75 North towards Okalhoma. Our first major town in Okalhoma was Muskogee. If you ask JMob, it is pronounced Mus-kah-gee. It was a wonderful laugh. We crossed the Missouri state line about 5pm. We got off I-44 and went north on 71 to Kansas City. We went through Carthage, MO, where the Battle of Carthage took place. Before we got into Kansas City, we exited to Blue Springs, which is east of KC. We arrived at Kim's house in Blue Spings about 8pm. Kari stuck her head out the window and yelled, "Roommate!" Kim was standing on the porch and replied, "Awe, roommate!" Later that evening, we had a "Texas" dinner, nachos were served. Before the meal was prepared, Kim decided to drop the bowl of beef on the floor. Dinner was delayed for a few hours, but bedtime was soon to come.

Tuesday: JMob and I were allowed to sleep till 11:30am. Apparently, the girls decided to get up early that morning and hang out and we needed to join them. We got moving and headed to a classic Blue Springs restaurant The Big Biscuit.Kim showed us around Blue Springs and we ended up in Kansas City. Just east of KC, we stopped at Arrowhead Stadium and Kaufman Stadium, where the Chiefs and Royals play. The two stadiums are side by side. We were allowed to go into the Royals Stadium, but we took it upon ourselves the see the Chief's field. Kari walked into the Arrowhead Club and her and Beth began looking around. There was no one in sight, so they continued to "look around." We all followed and eventually got to the field. We saw the Kansas City Star, Hallmark Headquarters, Union Station and many other buildings. Later that eveing, we went to dinner at 54th Street. We went skating at Crown Center in downtown Kansas City. No one offically wiped out, but JMob did hit the ice. Kari and I skated hand in hand several times on the ice. It was a delightful evening, that ended with a stop at Starbucks.

Wednesday: We began a late start, but the looks to hold a wonderful time in Kansas City. We are planning to go to a restaurant where the food is delivered by a train and a popular area of KC called The Plaza. Tune in next time...for the conclusion of the Missouri Trip.

2007: End of the year...and beyond!

Christmas and the New Years celebration has come and gone. Kari and I traveled many miles across the great state of Texas visiting family. We began celebrating Christmas on Dec. 17th with my mom's family in La Grange, TX. Than my mother came to San Marcos on Friday, the 22nd to take our engagement pictures. We shot photos on the Texas State campus and near the San Marcos River. We exchanged gifts later that evening. On Saturday, we went and celebrated Christmas with Kari's family in College Station. On Sunday, Christmas Eve, we went to my aunts and celebrated with my dad's family. Later that afternoon, we met my father at my Granny and Grandad's house. The house remains empty after their passing in July and September. We reflected on their lives and the many memories that we made in their home. We drove to Milano that evening and read the Christmas story. We woke up Christmas morning to find many gifts delivered by Santa. Later that week, we spent time at Kaleo Lodge in Mineola, TX with most of her mother's family. On New Years eve, we traveled back to join the FLBC youth on a trip to Main Event in Austin. We stayed up till one o'clock with the youth bowling, playing video games, putt-putt golf, etc. It was a blessed holiday filled with lots of time with family and friends.

The new year, 2007, brings new labels and adventures to Kari and I. On March 10th, I will no longer be single, but married. We will be getting married in Cameron, TX. I am now a senior at Texas State and graduation is around the corner. We have several plans for the upcoming year and are excited about the future. We are looking forward to what God has planned for us. May God Bless each of you in the new year.

Main Street Bethlehem

The first and second weekends of December in Burnet, Texas attract many people from around the state. Sunday, December 3rd, Kari and I attended Main Street Bethlehem with several friends of ours. We journeyed across central Texas to witness the live nativity sponsored by First Baptist Burnet. When I first considered the trip, the stereotypical "nativity scene" popped in my head: people dressed up as Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and a few live animals. The church saw passed this simple vision and went above and beyond to achieve a town setting, characters dressed as towns people, and doing activities that we might has seen in Bethlehem during the time of Christ birth. The life-size town of Bethlehem in Burnet resides on half a city block and contains soldiers, peasants, drunkards, and peddlers. Most of the population was attempting to pay their taxes, or raise enough money to satisfy the tax collectors. Bread-makers offered a sample of bread, rope maker touted the strength of their rope and Roman guards led petty thieves to the jail tower. This amazing atmosphere led us by a blacksmith forge and through a booked inn where wealth men and women found refuge from the cold. This entire town scene culminated in a cave located on the outskirts of Bethlehem. Therein the cool and damp cave were was a young couple with a new baby boy. This baby represents Christ. This cold night was well-worth spent in Burnet. It bring into perspective the humbling beginnings of our Lord. In the words of Isaiah, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel." "God with us," is what Emmanuel means and through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our sins can be atoned for by his blood. It was a wonderful reminder and experience to be a part of. God Bless.

Olen Miles Auditorium @ Highland Lakes Encampment

On Saturday in route to celebrate Thanksgiving with Kari's family in Milano, TX, Kari received a text message from our friend Stine. I cannot quote the text message, but will paraphrase, "Miles is on fire." Kari relayed the information and ten questions flooded my headed. I inquired, "How and when?" Kari called Stine to get some details. Stine told us that the building was on fire and that the roof had fell in. According to an e mail sent by the camp,
"The blaze broke out about 1:00 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, the building and all its contents were totally destroyed, according to Executive Director, Danny Dawdy. Even though the building was insured, the estimated cost for the damage has not been determined."

Memories: As most of you know Miles Auditorium was where I have spent my last three summers. It holds many memories for myself and Kari. It is also significant because this is the place Kari and I meet in the Summer of 2005. I was on a ladder fixing the lights the stage when I saw a beautiful blonde young lady coming in to move chairs. We immediately were acquainted because I wore a maroon Texas State bracelet. She mistook it for Texas A&M, and proceeded to inquire about the bracelet. From there, Miles Auditorium, she and I began our relationship. This place will not be forgotten. Keep the camp in your prayers. God Bless and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

School and The Hunt

Today is registration day for Spring 2007. I am looking over my transcript and coming to the realization that I don't have too many more classes. I will be a Senior at Texas State in December and most of my important classes will be complete. I still need to work on my foreign language, but they only meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I am going to see an advisor in about an hour to figure out whatelse I can take and than register at noon.

Yesterday evening, we participated in The Hunt at church. The Hunt was a city wide scavenger hunt that included tasks as simple as reading the marquee at the theater, to knocking on someone's door offering to take out their trash. Kari and I cruised around with six Junior High Boys in an attempt at gaining first prize. The competition included two other Jr. High teams, the Freshmen, Sophomore them, and the Seniors. The points were totaled up and my team ranked last. We are claiming that the Seniors driver sped! It was a wonderful time that ended with a deep closing thought. Nic told the students that we just spent an hour having fun, fellowshipping, and that's what the evening was planned for. But we chased after meaningless items in a effort to claim victory. What if we chased after God that way and we did as Jesus commanded, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). Spreading his name among the nations, your neighbors, your co-workers and even complete strangers. Christ has commanded that we not keep our relationship with Jesus a secret, but share to everyone. It is not a recommendation, suggestion nor an optional thing, but a command. Jesus was speaking to the eleven disciples in this passage. Jesus does not charge one with this task, but all of the men standing before him. There were no personality test that told him that only Peter was set aside to spread the Gospel, but charged each of them to spread His name. God uses our testimonies and the Holy Spirit moves among unbelievers that spreads His name among the nations and brings glory to God. Tell a neighbor or a friend, that God loves them and that by Christ's blood they can be saved. God Bless

The Night of October 21, 2006

October 21st began as most Saturday's of mine begin, sleeping in as long as possible. I made it till about 11:30am and began my day with plans of asking someone special a very important question. Kari and I were in Milano visiting her mom and when we are in the area she loves to visit her grandparents. We left Milano after I got out of bed and visited her grandparents. With many thoughts rushing through my headed I need to prepare for the evening and clear my head. Kari had suggested earlier that I meet up with JMob and get her oil changed. I left her grandparent to get the oil changed and hang out with JMob. We went to the mall and bought matching Detroit Tigers hats in our continued support of Major League Baseball (We are not rooting for St. Louis because the Astros are sitting at the house!) We previewed a potential location for the BIG question, but I was still uncertain of how everything would happen. I love giving surprise and with that in the back of my mind, I knew that I had to make her think one thing, while doing another. Back at her grandparents house, I quickly insisted on going to her favorite restaurant Casa Ole, instead of Johnny Carino's (a more romantic spot). In addition to this curveball, I invited JMob and our mutual friend Beth to join us for Mexican food. It was a good dinner, (bad service) but free ice cream. We walked in the mall for a little bit, but decided to get in the car and find a place to hang out. A stroll in the park was suggested and I drove the group to Wolf Creek Pen (this is the park JMob and I scouted earlier that day). We stared to walk and near Johnny Carino's Kari and Beth decided to go use the restroom. This gave JMob and I an opportunity to run across the park back to the car to get some items I wanted to use for the question. After a few moments of running, I was out of breath and threw the car keys to JMob and said, "Grab the black back pack!" He ran ahead and met me at the bridge we selected. I took ten candles and lined them along the bridge leading towards the end of the bridge. I gave JMob my video camera and we both hid. Beth called JMob and asked, "Where are you guys?" JMob let her know the game was in motion and to come back to the car. With intention of Kari seeing the candles, we waiting in hiding for Kari to arrive. When they came around the bend, both Beth and Kari noticed the candles. Kari asked, "Are those for me?" Beth encouraged her to find out what was on the bridge and Beth hung behind. Kari proceed down the path and turned around to find JMob following her with my video camera and Beth jumping in the bushes to spy the ordeal. As she walked across the bridge, I waited in the bushes for the right moment to reveal myself. When she reached the last candle I came out of hiding and presented myself. She was smiling and I gave her a hug and told her, "I have to ask you something important, but I can't do it standing." I took a knee before her and held her hand. I said, "Kari D. Davenport, I knew from the day that I met you, you were someone special. I love you. Will you marry me?" She glowed with excitement and asked, "Do I say yes now?" I replied, "wait just a moment." I reached into my pocket to reveal a small black box. I opened it and presented the ring I had purchased. She handed the box back and said, "Will you put it on?" I took the box back and took the ring out. I held her hand and than slipped the ring on her finger. She looked me in the eyes and said, "Yes." It was a wonderful evening and one we both will never forget. We both thank you for your encouragement, kind words and prayers. God Bless.

Coffee is delightful and so is God!

As I sit in the Coffee Pot Espresso Bar on the Square in San Marcos, I am content with my surroundings and current state of relaxation. Although the re-mix version of Johnny Cash's One Piece at a Time (the CD is skipping) plays over the coffee house speakers, I find myself looking forward to this evenings bible study. We will be taking a look at Ephesians 2. I have encouraged everyone to try and read it at least once a day, but many times we find ourselves too busy. Since, last Tuesday, I have only read the passage four times, but in those four readings something different has caught my attention. Frankly, in the first reading, I am not sure if I got anything at all, but I am certain the following three times I was able to glean some valuable insights into how Christ would have us live. It is an encouragement to know that Christ is our cornerstone, in which we can built our life on. It says in Ephesians 2:19-20 we are "fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone." We are adopted into God's family through the blood of Jesus Christ, and nothing can take that away from us. We are apart of a family that should be loving, caring, helping, and encouraging one another daily. With Christ as the center of our lives, we experience freedom, love, redemption and many other blessings. This freedom I bask in this morning at the coffee shop is granted by the Almighty and I am thankful for that today. I hope that each of you will find this contentment in the Lord Jesus. Have a blessed day.

Randomness

Kari and I were head back to her place, when we saw a young man by the old fish hatchery on campus. The campus contains some of the first fish hatcheries in Texas. Upon closer look, the young man seemed to be casting something into the pond. It became evident that he was fly fishing in the old fish hatchery on campus. I am unsure of the legality of this, but am pretty certain, those historic ponds are protected by some law. I guess if he was throwing his catch back, it is not that bad!

We played Capture the Flag on Saturday night with twelve students in Cedar Creek. There are a few stories to share from that event:

I had built a camp fire for our group to sit around as well as cook hot dogs. We broke out the cold hot dogs and told the kids to find a stick or something to cook their hot dogs on. Victoria, a seventh grader, exclaimed, "Is that sanitary?!?" It was a priceless moment from one of the "city kids."

Later that evening, we were in the battle field playing Capture the Flag. For those not familiar, each team has a jail and hidden location of their flag. The goal is to retrieve the opposing teams flag with out getting taken to jail. As I guarded my team's jail, I noticed a flashlight deep within our territory. In order to properly defend our area I followed the light. After crossing the woods, I learned that the light had originated from one of my teammates Julie. She was a bit frazzled, and confessed. She admitted to me that she was lost and had no clue where she was. It seemed she spent most of her time crawling for fear of getting caught, but ultimately she was on our side, just lost.

One more bit of randomness...

Kari's cousin Neilie came into town to visit. I had agreed to take the ladies out to dinner. As a treat to myself and the two girls, I took them to Clear Springs. Clear Springs is on the East side of New Braunfels and has excellent catfish and onion rings. The last time I was there, I ordered a small batch of onion rings and this amount did not fill me up. I proceeded to order a large order of onion rings. The waitress said, "You know that feeds four to six people?" I replied, "Yes ma'am." She brought the onion rings out and Kari, Neilie, and I began eating. Before dinner was over, a man and his wife came over to introduce himself and inform us that we were the talk of his table. He said, we wondered if you and your table could eat all those onion rings. I just said we were hungry or something of the sorts. As he walked away, I said nice to meet you and gave him the thumbs up. He said, "Are you?" Not completely aware of the additional meaning, it dawned on me he was referring to being an Aggie. I replied, "No, but these two are." Kari was not sure what the conversation was about. The older man reached across the table to show Kari his class ring, but she thought he was trying to "pound it." (Fist to fist greeting or acknowledgement of one another, instead of shaking hands) To my surprise, I thought the same thing, but she stopped short of "pounding" the man's fist and said, "Oh, you went to A&M!" It was a great time!

Hope you enjoyed these little tales from my weekend. Have a great week.

Expo

I worked the fifteenth annual Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo this past weekend. It was a long weekend, but well worth the time spent on the grounds. We have provided sound for the event for several years and each year there seems to be more and more people attending. The Sea World show with Julie Scardina was informative and filled with exciting animals including a lynx, peinguin and a kangaroo. The Birds of Prey show was also notable. Above is a Red Tailed Hawk who was showcased in the presentation. After seeing this show three year ago, I find myself often noticing these birds perched on high hunting their prey. That's all for today.

Adventures in College Station

I have said it before and will say it again, I love Wednesday!

Yesterday we took a trip to College Station with every intention on attending Breakaway. Kari, Stoney and I left San Marcos about 5:30pm, unaware of what may lie ahead in College Station. Breakaway is a, "non-denominational, weekly Bible study at Texas A&M University," according to the website. Last night, Shane & Shane was scheduled to lead worship until the power company had a slight problem. According to the Houston Chronicle, "A transformer explosion sparked a power outage that affected an estimated 86,000 homes and businesses in Bryan, College Station and four surrounding counties." We were aware of the problem as we drove east, but did not consider the traffic ramification until we received a phone call that travel time from one block to the next was about thirty minutes. We stopped our progress and ate dinner with Kari's mother and sister in Caldwell at MasFajitas. On a side note: Unless it is the only restaurant open, NEVER eat at MasFajitas in Caldwell. Horrible service, bad food, and horrible service...wait, did I already say that! During dinner we received a phone call that power was back on in College Station and with the right speed we could still make the nine o'clock worship service. To our surprise, Breakaway was cancelled. We meet up with some close friends, JMob and Beth and attempted to find some place to hang out. Finally we arrived at Sweet Eugene's and drank some caffeinated beverages. It was a wonderful evening of singing, dancing, and laughing with good friends. Gig 'em! And please, would someone turn the lights back on!

Little bit of everything

Yesterday was my granny's funeral. The services went well. I believe that Granny would have been honored by the words that were used to describe her life. Not only words, but an outpouring of love from family and friends from those who knew Granny and some that were there in support of close family members. I was able to say a few words that invoked many good memories for many who knew Granny. Granny and Grandad will be loved and missed, but never forgotten.

School continues on. Thursday at 10:45am is the official start time of my weekend. I have a busy weekend ahead. On Friday evening I am making a visit to College Station to see JMob. I am sure the time will spent hanging out, exchanging mp3's, and drinking some good coffee. Nic and I have a pending game of Junior High Capture the Flag tentatively scheduled for Saturday evening. Last Saturday evening we had planned to play, but the rain prevented us from ever beginning the game. In addition, I hope to finish editing a short film for church on Sunday morning that will show the congregation some highlights of the Junior High Retreat.

Thoughts on Granny

As I slow the many thoughts and emotions, I consider the many blessings that have already been astowed upon myself. I also considered the fact that I had never lost anyone close, or one I dearly loved, but on July 5th I could no longer have that thought. On November 25, 1939, in McMahan Harold Hellums was married to Sylvia Robinson (better known to me as Granny). She remained strong after the passing of her husband on July 5th, but many times she would express to me her longing to be with Harold again. At the beginning of September, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. After being released from the hospital, she was sent home to Cedar Creek where she spent less than a month heavily drugged (for the pain) and sleepy. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I saw her on Friday, September 15, 2006. We talked about myself some and how she was feeling. She was in good spirits and glad to see me. On Friday evening, September 22, my father called to inform me that she had passed. I was aware that she was doing worse, but unexpectedly received the news with tear-laden eyes. What I have learned is similar to what it says in James 4:14, "Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." We do not know what will happen tomorrow, as I did not know that my grandmother would pass so quickly. Our life is important to God. You are seen in God's eyes, or his time frame as "a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." God would have us make to most of what we are doing, how we are effecting those around us, and in the end, are we giving all that glory and honor to Him. I will echo James, what is your life? Granny will be loved and missed, but the many examples of kindness, love, being honest and caring will go on through my actions. Say a pray for my family and I. God Bless.

Family Update

On Sunday we had a get together to celebrate my birthday at my mother's parents house in Bastrop. We had a great dinner prepared by my grandmother and enjoyed conversation with my brother, Aaron, his wife, Katie, my mother, Maw-maw, Pa-pa, Kari, and Shelbi. We had one of my all time favorites Chicken and Rice. Matthew stayed home this weekend to write a paper. He told me he would make it up to me by getting me a SFA t-shirt for my belated birthday.

I received a phone call from my Pop today concerning my Granny. He told me that she is continuing to decline. My aunt Gail sent me an e mail and stated, "[she] needs the liquid morphine to keep her comfortable so she sleeps a great deal." I had a chance to see her last Friday and when I went in through the garage I found the two home care ladies in the kitchen. Granny was asleep, or so it seemed. I took a peek for myself and she seemed sleeping. I kindly asked the ladies, "Can you tell Gran...," before I could finish Granny popped her head up and said, "Who's there?" We got to talk for a while and than she got sleepy. I would ask that you continue to keep her in your prayers and also my immediate family concern this update.

To Blog or Not to Blog...(General thoughts)

Upon request from a dear friend, I find myself writing a blog instead of napping. I had, in fact, considered it earlier today, but had not found the time. In addition to the new background, JMob coached me through posting my blog on facebook. I get that "old" feeling when younger people have to walk me through certain technology issues. Glad to see all you on facebook, enjoy the read...

I had my first exam this semester today. I have never taken spent the entire class to complete an exam, so maybe this is a good sign that I actually knew what I was doing. Although, I did end up rushing my conclustion on my essay due to the lack of time. The First Lockhart Baptist Church (FLBC) Junior High students are attending a retreat this weekend that I will be apart of. We will be doing some bible study, night time Capture the Flag, and just hanging out. We started a Tuesday night bible study at Kari's apartment. Please keep us in your prayers, as we juggle the busy schedule of being students (well, some of the students are busy!).

Twenty-five Years!

September 7th was my twenty-fifth birthday. Kari had a Superman theme party for me at her apartment. She had already given me two early gifts for my birthday, but still got me some gifts. She got me a maroon Texas State shirt, some sun glasses and my favorite body wash, Ax. That evening we went and played racketball (I was victorious). I received many phone calls, messages, and posts from many and I am thankful for all your birthday wishes. I appreciate everyone taking time to wish me a happy birthday. Friday, my father drove to San Marcos. He and I had Chinese buffet at A Taste of China. He gave me a Time magazine from the aftermath of September 11th and a book entitled 80 Days that Changed the World. Later that evening, Kari and I joined Nic and Jo at Game Three of Pacific Coast Playoffs in Round Rock. The Round Rock Express came into the game even with the Nashville Sound, both winning one game. The National Anthem was sang, and than the rain began to fall. Nic and I tried to stick it out, but we decided the gift shop was good shelter. We stayed inside to allow the rain let up and eventually it did and we watched the opening pitch. It rained throughout the game and eventually we decided to move to the Home Run Porch (covered seats, overlooking left field). When we arrived to some open seats, the ninth inning completed with a score of 5-5. The announcer stated, "The game will resume in thirty minutes due to the rain." We waited patiently and were treated to the fireworks show during the wait. The game resumed play, and we returned to our seats. ***WARNING*** Graphic baseball details to follow: In the Top of the 10th, one out and the bases loaded, it seemed that Round Rock was about to loose a second game. The pitcher brought his "A" game and struck out the next to batters closing out the top of the 10th. In the Bottom of the 10th, two Round Rock players stepped up to the plate and were hit by the pitcher. With two men on, the last batter got up and smashed a base hit to complete the game. Round Rock 6 Nashville 5. It was a wonderful time and quality baseball. Tune in next time...

Rain

I think the rainy day deserves a least a bit of an honorary recognition. I was so excited about the rain this morning, I went to catch the bus and waited in the rain for 20 minutes. After becoming soaked, I went to class and completed my Tuesday school day. My Labor Day weekend went well. Saturday, Kari and I attended her cousins wedding in Bastrop. It was a good time with her family and some of my old high school friends. Sunday was the fantasy football draft. The Jackalopes are ready to begin the season in an attempt to win the championship. Kari got a job with Kelly Baird. She will be working three times a week and taking care of their six children. We spent Labor Day with the Baird. Cody and I watched the Astros and Kari got to know the children. Later that evening we had dinner with Nic and Jo. To end the night, we pulled over and watched the re-scheduled 4th of July fireworks in Lockhart. Stay dry.

Tire Issues

Yesterday was successful and frustrating. After having lunch with the pastor, Nic and I caught a girls volleyball game in San Marcos. It was a good day, but ended on a bad note. In my effort to boycott the Parking Service Department at the university(ie. not buying a parking sticker because the price increase was 108%), Kari asked me to pick her up (cause I encouraged her not to buy one too!). I picked her up, but had noticed that my car was not driving correctly. I got out and found a screw in my tire. I added some air, but was frustrated. We had dinner plans with Stine, but the frustration and thought of changing the tire loomed. I dropped Kari off at Jason's Deli and went to Wal-Mart. I arrived five mintues after closing. I went back and changed that tire and waited till today to get a new tire. Tune in next time for the Exciting Adventures of...insert title here!

School & Early Birthday

School began on August 23, 2006. I ended up with a good schedule, but have to be on campus everyday excluding Fridays. I am a full-time student this semester taking 12 hours. The classes will require some reading, but more writing. After this semester, I will officially announce my classification as a senior. I have already received two early birthday presents from Kari. Sunday evening Kari was returning home from Milano and she said to me on the phone, "I have a surprise for you!" As I returned to San Marcos after morning and evening church, she asked me to meet her at her apartment. Within four minutes of our conversation, she had already given me a hint and I had guessed that she was giving me a kitten. While we were in California, my mother, Kari and I went to an animal shelter and I enjoyed watching four kittens play and tackle one another. Being mindful of this, Kari got me a kitten. We named her Calli. My second present was a Canon Powershot Camera that I have been window-shopping for a few months now. The pictures posted today were taken by my new camera. It has already been a wonderful birthday, made possible by Kari, and it is not even my birthday yet!

Family News:

My Granny was taken to the hospital last weekend. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and will not be able to receive treatment due to various factors. Matthew left for Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX to begin his college career. Please keep both of these in your prayers, as Granny struggles with the cancer, the passing of her husband, and Matthew begins school. Have a blessed day.

California

Kari and I made it safely to California. I decided to take a last minute pre-school vacation to go see my mother in California. We flew into San Diego on Tuesday morning and spent the day in and around my mothers house. We swam, visited and Kari cooked dinner. We spent Wednesday evening in San Diego on a cruise of the San Diego Bay and ate steak and salmon. Thursday was a day in Los Angeles. We cruised the Hollywood Hills, stumbled upon Batman's cave, a shot of an episode of Cold Case, and the movie release of Snakes on a Plane. In the evening, we went to the Santa Monica Pier. Tune in later for more...

Interesting

After the Wednesday night service concluded, Nic, Johanna, Mrs. Pittman, and the Pittman clan went to Taco Bell. It was a delightful meal, but Michael and I were still hungry. We proceeded to wait in line for one more taco. At this time, only one cashier was working the counter and we were third in line. The man placing the order asked many questions concerning his meal, but finally placed an order. After paying for the meal he attempted to put his coins and bills back into his wallet. With no success, the man continued to drop his coins and pick them back up. Michael and I ordered, but the man remained in front of the cashier. While he was attempting to pick up his change, I offered to help him with the coins, he replied, "No, thanks, I am just having trouble." At this point it was evident the man was not of sound mind. Either he was drunk or high, but the circus continued. He got his drink cup, and attempted to put ice in it, but failed. His food came out, and he asked, "Is this my burger?" He took his bag to the condiments stand and filled the bag with hot sauce. Somehow, he spilled his cup of tea and ended up in the women's' restroom. I called to police and reported that it was probably a good idea that this man should not drive. After we figured out that he had actually driven to Taco Bell, we were surprised to learn he parked next to Nic. The Lockhart Police Department (LPD) came and took control of the situation.

It is sad to consider that many people can lose themselves in such addicting outlets. We all over, neighbors and even family members turn to such things for a variety of reasons, but in the end it only does more harm than good. These things can be overcome, "...because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). God can deliver people in these conditions and with constant prayer the chains of evil can be broken. In the book of James we are encouraged, "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise" (James 5:13). Both in bad times and good times, we should lift up prayers to God. People who are struggling in whatever stronghold need the Lord, they%

Mission LTX plus some...

It is amazing to watch God work all over. His presence is everywhere, you just have to be tuned in. It is hard to listen to your favorite tunes on a radio station when you do not know the frequency and there is a lack of antenna. Our focus should be on God and we should be tuned in. The student ministry at First Lockhart took church to the world. With permission from two communities in Lockhart, the students spent an hour and a half for four days with over 34 children playing games, singing songs, talking about God, and making crafts. This was a chance for our students to get outside the walls and boldly share the Good News. When we go out into our communities and give our time to God by sharing the Word, His love, and His goodness, He showers blessings on you. Three children came to our church on Wednesday night because our young people's willingness to step out of the comfort zones and share God's love. Jesus says, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). Go out, smile and share God's love. Find out how you can help someone, encourage your brother/sister when they are down and continue to live as Christ did. If you need help ask the Lord for boldness and strength, Jesus says, "Have faith in God...I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (Mark 11:22,24). Have a blessed day.

Months...

Oh...some much to review and so little time to do it, cause i am sleepy! I wanted to say a few words. July 5, 2006 was a sad day for me and my family. Two weeks prior on a Saturday, I had gone to visit my grandfather (Grandad) in Cedar Creek. He had been diagnosed with dementia and was declining rapidly. I saw him in a state of confusion, unable to speak, and he seemed to be else where. I prepared my self for the coming days, but instead received a phone call that he was doing a lot better. I was planning to attend Patterson's wedding on July 7th, but the phone call I got altered my plans. I called Patterson and nothing but consoling words and understanding from a Godly man who knew that family came first. Regrettably, I was unable to attend and take part in his wedding, but the closure that came by staying home was needed. Grandad always said, "Don't tear up the grass," and in reply to 'I love you,' "same back." These few words and many more will be with me till the day that I go home to see the Lord and be reunited with him. I thank all those for their condolences and prayers. I ask that you would continue to pray for my family. Few words turned in to many, and I only covered one topic, but that is all I have tonight.

On the Road Again

I will be hitting the road again with the FLBC youth. We are leaving for Dallas tomorrow to attend the Youth Evangelism Conference where we will see KJ-52, Barlow Girl, Tree 63, and Big Daddy Weave. The drama will be provided by the Skit Guys and illusions by Lou Leventhal. The featured speaker is Voddie Baucham. According to his website, www.voddiebaucham.org Baucham is "an author, Bible teacher, churchman and an apologist. His unique blend of sound biblical exposition and cutting-edge relevance make him one of the most unique and compelling voices in modern evangelical circles." It should be a blessed time for myself and the young people on the trip. On Monday, Pre-Teen Camp one begins at Highland Lakes Encampment. Tune in next time.

Last Full Day of Camp

It has been a fun week at camp for JMob and I. I was AD of Security this week and got to stay up late to make sure that the students stayed in their assigned dorms. Tonight is the last night, so that basically guarantees someone will attempt to escape. We will be there waiting to catch them. We worked with Billy Bob White and Brandon Barnard. I will be heading home some time on Friday afternoon.

On another note, I went down to the docks and helped Kari get her boat in and out on the water. She took one group out and told me one of the girls practiced Wicca. During worship, Kari got up and gave her testimony. After she did so, Billy Bob got up and asked if anyone wanted to come to know Christ based on what they had heard. A young man stood up and threw his hands up. It was an exciting time. In addition, Kari spotted the young lady who claimed to practice Wicca. She leaned over and asked me to prayer for the young lady throughout worship. We both lifted up prayers and during the invitation the young lady arose and went to the back to receive counseling. What an awesome God we serve. Just thought I would share these highlights.

At Camp

Journey II is begins tomorrow afternoon. JMob and I drove out to Highland Lakes Encampment tonight so we would not have to get out of bed too early. It was a great Sunday. The new youth minister spoke at FLBC this morning and encouraged the church to look at the early church in Acts. They fellowshipped together, got to know one another, loved one another, and welcomed anyone who would join them. A church is a body of believers who love one another and their neighbors. It was a refreshing reminder. I got some sweets gifts from Kari this evening. She got to go to town and do a little shopping. While in Houston I got her a 2005 National League Champions Astros shirt. She gave me a card celebrating our one year date anniversary, some Skittles, and other items that I can't spell! Oh, if you are trying to reach me and you can get my voicemail try email: jhellums@austin.rr.com

Goodnight to all.

Back in San Marcos

JMob and I returned from Houston this evening. The Saturday game did not go as well as Friday nights game, but it was still fun to be at the ballpark. Clay and Megan meet us at Union Station and we all enjoyed the game. The Astros lost the game 4-2. I am putting together some VBS video footage for church tomorrow. That is about all I have. Good night.

Astros Trip

I wrapped up VBS with a pie in the face today. As a competition for the boys and girls this week I agreed to take a pie in the face if the girls raised more money than the boys. Our mission offering this past week would go to buy bibles in India and we encouraged the children to support this cause by either myself getting a pie in the face or the children's minister. The boys were short all week, but one giver thought to make it interesting and made the final difference a penny, but still wanted me to get the pie. I smiled and took one for the boys. Afterward, and still tonight, the smell of the nasty ready wipe is still on me (yes, I have showered). JMob and I planned by the seat of our pants and our in Houston tonight. We saw Game Two of the Braves vs. Astros tonight in which the Astros won 7-2. The game began with C. Jones getting on base with a single and than A. Jones hit a homerun, scoring the only two runs for the Braves. In the bottom of the 1st, Biggio and Lamb hit homeruns back to back. So, we are staying in Houston tonight and meeting Clay and Megan for the Saturday afternoon game. It is a blast being at the game. Kari is sick today. She went to the doctor this afternoon and got some medication. Please keep her in your prayers. That is all for tonight. Go Astros.

VBS Day Two

As the co-recreation guy, it was planned to play a certain game, but my partner tried the game on his own children and it was decided the game would not work. Without hesitation, we pulled out the five gallon buckets and filled them up with ice and water and got wet again! I went out to lunch the new youth minister and his wife and than came home to put together another daily video for VBS. Tomorrow I am headed out to camp to help JMob do worship because Stan will be working at his church. It should be an eventful day, as was today.

VBS Day One: Complete

I believe today was a great first day of VBS. We played a relay game today where the students were divided into two teams and they had to retrieve marbles from two five gallon buckets of ice water. The cold water kept some of the students from getting any marbles, but most of the time they withstood the cold and found some marbles. I set my alarm clock last night for seven in the morning, but forgot to turn it on and thankfully awoke and 7:10am. In addition, as I tried to fall asleep, either I was anxious about the first day of VBS or the two grande cups of Starbucks I had earlier were keeping me wide awake. I am currently reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and Mark Steele's Flashbang. The first is a easy read in a fiction world and the second is Steele's realization that Christianity is just more that claiming to be a Christian. Tune in next time.

Camp plus more!

It has been too long. My little brother graduated, I moved to San Marcos and I have begun working out at Highland Lakes Encampment. JMob and I completed our first week of camp, Hyde Park’s Camp Travis. We had the pleasure of working with By The Tree (picture above) and Ed Newton. The camp went very smooth and the schedule was very easy on JMob and I. In fact, it was so easy, we usually had time in the day to get in two naps. One day we browsed the web for about four hours, played at the waterfront, and then went to town to get a few necessities (Target!). It was a blessed week, about sixty students came to know Jesus as Lord. Journey Camps will start today, but I will only be out there for some of the worship because this week is also Vacation Bible School (VBS) week at First Lockhart Baptist Church (FLBC). I was asked to be the host and the recreation guy this year and am looking forward to another fun summer week of VBS with the children in our community. Kari's father came home from Iraq, so she and I spent the weekend in Milano. We spent time with her family and enjoyed a good sermon at her home church. That is it for now...check back soon for more updates.

Last Official Week of School

I will hit a few highlights of last week and this week in today's post. We did a Cory Morrow show on Thursday night in San Marcos. I went to the cargo truck to get some extra cable and a sound of a marble or small rocks began hitting the truck. I looked out side and realized it began to hail. The sound increased and the thought of being hit by ice was not pleasant, but I came to realize it was the lack of insulation in the truck that made the sound so loud and terrifying. My car did not suffer any hail damage, but sadly a few miles south at the San Marcos outlet mall, many cars were so damaged they were declared totaled.

Friday night and on into Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of being the Master of Ceremonies at the Lockhart Relay for Life. Basically that meant, I got to do most of the speaking at the event. It was a successful event. At last check, Lockhart had raised almost $65,000 for the American Cancer Society. After sleeping the day away, JMob and I went to the Lockhart theater and saw the new Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland movie The Sentinel. I am a huge fan of 24, so I enjoyed seeing Kiefer Sutherland in this new movie. He is always saving the world or the president.

Today began at 7am with a cool shower, granola bar, and a small sip of Dr. Pepper. This is the last week of school and than finals will spill over into the first week of May. I only have to take two finals, but this Thursday I will turn in a 12 page book review/contrast paper. Tonight, pending weather (there is a 50% chance of rain), we have a softball game scheduled. I am looking forward to taking the field. Will and I are two documents away from having an apartment in San Marcos. I have to go pick up a notarized document from my aunt on Wednesday morning and that should seal the deal. Tune in next time...

Without Further Ado...

Tomorrow is Good Friday and Kari and I are in College Station with her cousin Nelie. Yesterday evening at church, the youth and I read from Luke 23-24 and discussed what Christ did for us on the cross that day described in those scriptures. As a conclusion, we watched the last scene in the Passion of the Christ. The scene goes black, you hear a rumbling and see a light. The stone that was placed in front of the tomb was being moved away and light illuminated the tomb. The camera pans to the left and you see white burial clothes, but there is no longer anyone wrapped inside. The camera pans a little more left and a dark skinned, long haired, and bearded man sits in silence. He rises and the scene reveals the open wound where a nail had previously been and he walks out of the tomb. Jesus is risen. Luke 24:1-8 states,

"On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " Then they remembered his words."

Have a blessed Easter weekend.

One Week of School Post-Spring Break

The school week went well. I do have to admit, I extended my Spring Break on Tuesday morning by skipping my 8am. I has been a delightful week that brings the start of a new softball season. Formerly the Kingsmen, and now just simply First Lockhart Baptist Church, we open with a double header tonight at 7pm. I am sure it will be a time for us to knock the rust off. School is going well, my writing is much improved over last semester and seems to be pulling me through two of my classes (I had a professor last semester who beat writing into everyone, I am thankful). Bundle up if you are coming out to the game cause it is chilly! Have a great evening.

Spring Break, Here and Gone

It was a great spring break. It ended with a trip to Wonder World with Kari, Kari's little sister and Stine. It is a cave beneath the Balcones fault line. It is very interesting to see how this plate has pulled apart and created an area of exploration and intrigue. My mother was in town this spring break as well. I was able to have dinner with her on Wednesday and Friday night. On the way home Friday night, a DPS officer decided he wanted to have a word with me, so our trip home was delayed. Saturday night JMob and I worked at the Six Lounge in the Warehouse District of Austin. It was an easy night, but very interesting. The opening act was an urban cowboy act based out of Los Angles, CA called King Straggler. One of the members was actor Brentley Gore. He was recently in a film entitled Zoe and a Saved By the Bell knock-off entitled California Dreams. He was a laid back guy and easy to work with. The second and last act was a one man band named Bob Log III. He shows up with two guitars, a kick drum, a kick cymbal (for lack of better names), two drum machines, and a helmet. This helmet was retrofitted with an old phone receiver that served as his microphone which he ran through an amp. The vocal was distorted and the clanging cymbal was the majority of his show. I have posted a picture above. I would never recommend Bob Log III to anyone looking for good music, but maybe for a good laugh. That concluded my Spring Break.

Kansas Aftermath and More...

We made it safely home from Kansas and than proceeded southeast to Galveston. In Galveston Kari and I meet her grandparents, mother, and sister. For those of you who do not know, I am not a seafood eater, but it turns out crab maybe good. We had dinner at the Rainforest Cafe and rode the super scary ride that is in the restaurant (really, some fake spider drop down and scare you!). The next day was an exploring day, we hit some souvenir shops and went to the strand. The Strand is the old Main Street of Galveston. These buildings withstood the hurricane of 1900 and only took small amounts of water damage on the lower floors. One old advertisement painted on the side of the buildings stated 1866. We ate a restaurant called Shrimp and Stuff, and after much search, I did not find much "stuff". With much hesitation, I ordered a Crab Poboy. It was excellent. I still claim I do not eat seafood, cause it is so darn expensive. Kari and I than made a day out of the Kemah Boardwalk. We rode many rides, a speed boat, and got a really sweet happy hour deal on dinner. These tales just about cover the first part of my Spring Break. I need to study for Sunday School now...tune in next time.

How to get to 287 8th Road, Clyde, KS?

At first glance, it seems simple enough, street name with the block number and town name. Yet, it turns out this address is deceiving. As Kari, Bonnie and I arrived in Clyde, Kansas, we were surprised to not find 8th Road. I hopped into a local bar (cause it was the only thing open) and inquired from the locals, "Do you know where 8th Road is?" I told them I was looking for a for a wedding and they told me where the three church were in Clyde. We checked all three churches and all the parking lots were empty. We came to the conclusion that there could be a possibility that we had the incorrect address. We made a phone call to an informant and learned that the brides hometown was Clifton. After flagging down a couple in a red jeep cherokee, we were told to take KS HWY 9 east about 12 miles. We found Clifton and the only two churches in the town were deserted. It had been a while since we had stopped for a restroom break, I insisted we go to the local store. I walk into the store first and to my right are about 10 elderly folks. We had found the old folks hangout. Kari bursts into the door behind me and seems to announce to the entire store, "Does anyone know where 8th Road is?" The man behind the counter thinks a moment and says you mean Eight Mile Road. He than say, "You all are looking for the wedding." We are taken aback and heave a sigh of relief, "YES!" He explains that 8th Road means eight miles down another road. We are confused, but he continues to explain, we are to take a right at a road in between Clyde and Clifton and go eight miles. The church was on the left down an eight mile gravel road, we walked in as the preacher pronounces them husband and wife and watched them kiss. That is how we got to 287 8th Road, Clyde, KS. Have a great evening.

Free Wi-Fi is Great!

Kari and I made it to Chickasha, OK safely. We have had a great trip so far, and an added bonus...I am stealing Wi-Fi from someone at Bonnie's apartment complex. Bonnie took us to Wal-Mart to check the Gift Registry and the machine froze up. Bonnie decided to take us on a tour of Chickasha, once we left Wal-Mart, she said the tour was over. We have a five hour trip ahead of us to Clyde, KS that will take us through Oklahoma City. We were informed that Oklahoma City is simply referred to as "The City". Neither Kari, nor I have ever been to Kansas. I know that is farmland and no trees is not anything to jump up and down about, but it is a new state that we can add to the checklist of states. Happy Trails.

Change of Plans

It was brought to my attention that Kari and I have mutual friends getting married this weekend. After some consideration and mulling over my non-existent Spring Break plan, I decided it would be fun to go to the wedding...in Kansas. We will start the first leg of our journey and stay in Oklahoma with Bonnie. Bonnie will navigate us through Oklahoma on to Kansas. We will attend the wedding and make our way back to Oklahoma. After resting in Oklahoma, we will be heading back to Central Texas on Sunday morning. Much thanks to Kevin.
Spring Break, but One More Class

It seems like forever that I have had anytime to sit and type personal thoughts. School is about go on break and I have a 3:45 this afternoon and I will officially begin my Spring Break. I just completed my second paper in less then 24 hours and will be turning it in shortly. I am looking forward to some time to relax and begins reading the third installment of Harry Potter. What began as a children's story, is beginning to read as a adult book. I have since found the first "bad word" in the 3rd book. I am excited to try something new this Sunday, police officer Steve has asked me to teach his adult Sunday school class. I am looking forward to some "adult" conversation and try my hand at an older crowd. Police officer Steve said it would be easy, just throw a question out there, they will do all the talking. Well that is all I have today. Have a great Spring Break for those of you in school.

John Piper Quote

I found this in a John Piper sermon given on September 26, 1999 entitled Faith: In Hope, Against Hope, for the Glory of God. "So even today after the coming of Christ, our faith is still future-oriented. Justifying faith trusts God for all he promises to be for us and do for us. This is why faith glorifies God. Believing that God has done things in the past glorifies God somewhat. But believing that God will do what he has promised to do in the future before you see him do it -that glorifies God even more. It honors his present and future trustworthiness. So faith is future-oriented because that gives God the most glory."

As the spring semester continues, I find myself facing many decisions and I was blessed to have find these encouraging words. I pray that my faith increases and I learn to listen more closely to what God has in store for me. I ask that you would pray for me.

Wednesday Night

This evening was an exciting night for the youth. Our church has been without a Youth Minister for about a year and a half and it seems the Lord has a man hand picked. The pastor let the youth know that he would be coming to meet them soon. Some of the younger kids have not even had a chance to get to know and learn from a youth pastor, so it will be such a blessing to have a man he will be growing the young people of FLBC.

Kari joined me for church this evening. She has not been feeling well the past few days, but let some smiles shine this evening. The evening went well with a last minute stop at the DQ with JMob. I had a banana split, Kari had a vanilla cone, and JMob had a chocolate milk shake. Hum...and I just listed off everything we ate!!! I will stop there and wish everyone a good week.

Hot Hearts...Cold Outside, Brrr!

We finished up a weekend at Highland Lakes Encampment at an event called Hot Hearts. Jericho Sound had the pleasure of working with the Jeff Berry Band, Wes Hamilton, and Jonathan Curtis. All three of these acts offered more ways than one to worship the Lord this weekend. Kari, JMob and I travelled up to Highland Lakes Thursday night to prepare for the weekend. Brrr! The weather changed, again. It is no longer 80 degrees and sunny in Central Texas, but rather it is rainy and cold now. That is one of the perks or downfalls of living in Texas, as many put it, if you do not like the weather, stick around it will change soon. This Saturday, Kari, JMob, Kari's friend Dorie and I will be seeing Chris Tomlin live in Austin. This will be the same venue Tomlin recorded his recently released Live Austin Music Hall and the second time JMob and I will have seen him play at Austin Music Hall.

I thank you for your prayer for my Grandad. I talked to my father today and hear that he is doing a lot better. I plan to make a surprise visit to Lockhart later this week and drop in on Granny and Grandad. The Word of God says, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

And the Crowd Listened Attentively

The Justin Cofield Band brought six songs this evening at worship. They closed the set with a vocal rendition of I Love You Lord leaving the young people quiet in prayer. As the Spirit among the crowd moved, Pat, the speaker sensing the mood made an alter call immediately. Pat's topic was about finding self worth in Jesus Christ not yourself or others and compared us to an original painting by God. We read from I Corinthians 12:12 and talked about how God made us a unique body. It was a blessing to see these young people resond in such a positive way to the spirit of worship and the Word of God. Descisions were made this evening, so prayers for these new brothers and sisters in Christ will be lifted up. Have a blessed evening.

It's Raining in Austin...And Everyone Forgot How to Drive

On the way to Pflugerville for a Disciple Now Weekend at First Baptist, I encoutered two ambulance in route to accidents. In addition, I saw at least four fender-benders and sat on Interstate 35 for thirty minutes in downtown Austin (that is pretty normal though!). I heard a great joke on talk radio though...the announcer said,"If you have a child under the age of seven, take them outside and show 'em what rain is!" Just a sidenote to the drivers in Austin: It's just rain...slow down a little bit.

Jericho Sound is working this weekend and we are staying at a La Quinta, which I don't think anyone really knows what that word means. We had some trouble setting the PA up, but once we got it running well things went smoothly. We checked into our room and rode the elevator upstairs to learn that room 221 only had a single king size bed. Now for the three guys pictured above, that would be some close quarters. We went down stairs, explained our situation to the lady and she was very understanding. Sleep time awaits.

Tuesday Evening

It is a mellow evening, hanging out at the house and thinking about doing homework. I have to get to work on that paper due Thursday. I am planning a trip to the library tomorrow to begin my research. I decided to research the town Xi’an located in China (sadly, I figure that is the city I am more likely to find the most information on). My other options were Krasnovodsk, Ashkabad, Nukus, Aktyubinsk and a few others, but I have not heard of these cities. I was reminded by a text message minutes ago that I had planned a lunch appointment, but I will have to break it. Not to mention writing the paper, I will need to study for Wednesday night bible study. I am looking forward to seeing the kids and talking about the Word. Have a great evening.
Chili Bowl 2006

The Chili Bowl was played on Saturday, and sadly in my coaching debut, I was handed my first loss. I will survive because much fun was had by many, at least 80 people showed up, and I didn't see to many angry people. I put together the footage late into Saturday night in order to have a DVD made for the Super Bowl party hosted at the church (we edit the commercials out and play music videos and chili bowl footage). My mother was in town this past weekend, as well. She and I visited Saturday evening and ate grandma's home cooking. It was a great time to visit with her, my brothers, my grandparents, aunt and uncle, and cousins too.

On a prayer topic, I would ask that you keep my Grandad Hellums and Granny in your prayers. Grandad is not doing well and I would appreciate it if you would pray for them. Also keep in mind my aunt Gail, Lana, and father Denis. God tells is in his word, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Racquetball and More...

I have only seen the tennis ball sized blue ball, but never really knew how to use it. Apparently it is known as a racquetball. You get one blue ball, a racket, and you enter a room with six walls and do not have to worry about putting out a light. It is a wonderful game. Kari is taking Beginner Racquetball this semester and I get to learn it as well. If fact, along with fencing, racket ball was on my list of "things to learn." Now, she and I both do not know if we have any of the rules right, but basically if I do not get hit by the ball or run into a wall, I think I am doing pretty good. School is going well. I completed my first five page paper and will be working on another one due next Thursday. The upcoming paper sounds intriguing and I am looking forward to it. The assignment it to find three buildings built in different decades in a town in Central Asia. With this descriptions of the buildings we build a small history and profile of the town. It should be an interesting project. I am looking forward to Saturday's Annual Chili Bowl. It is a flag football game where the adults face-off against the youth. The youth won last year and hope to extend the one game streak. It is a time of good competition and fellowship with many members of the church body (although anyone is invited). Sidenote: Reading a few things of note...for class Muslims in Central Asia, finishing up Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell, started Harry Potter #2, and also picked up Future Church by Jim L. Wilson from Bro. Randy's office. That is all...Off to meet Randy, JMob, and Stanley for lunch. Have a great Friday.
